Hollywood Romance
by Bob Blue

She was another good example of a self-defeating pattern.
I was tired of repeating every line.
I could see myself already slipping backwards, and forgetting
My priorities, and letting hers be mine.

I knew it would be better to renounce her and forget her, so I
Tried to do without her for a while.
Still, a gentle smile is a gentle smile.

So I found myself repeating my neurotic self-defeating
Recreations of romantic movie scenes.
I went singing in the rain, and doing Bogart imitations while she
Played the great romantic movie queens.

Hollywood had made the rules, and we played romantic fools, though even
Fools should have known it wasn't right.
Still, a lovely night is a lovely night.

We walked hand in hand beside the ocean,
Had breakfast at Tiffany's on a whim.
We even ran through a field in slow motion.
Till one day, she found another, said she loved me like a brother,
Then ran off to do some scenes with him.

Now I carry an umbrella.   My Gene Kelly act is finished.
When it's raining out, I tend to go indoors.
'Cause I know that your resistance to diseases   is diminished
If you dance and splash in puddles while it pours.

And the memories embarrass me.   I'm trying to forget the foolish
Games I played before I got so smart.
Still, a broken heart is a broken heart.
