3/08/2010        A message from Katy Blue ...
This summer, I will be doing a cross-country bike ride from my home in Vermont to Seattle, Washington. I am doing this ride to raise money to help fund research into the cause, treatment and a cure for multiple sclerosis, and to provide services to the over 400,000 people living with MS in the United States. My dad had multiple sclerosis, and he passed away due to complications from the disease in 2006. I have challenged myself to do this ride in his honor, and my goal is to raise $50,000. This is by far the greatest challenge I have set my mind to, and I am counting on your generosity and support to make this goal a reality! To make a donation please follow the attached link or send a check to me directly at: 716 Shaker Hill Road, Starksboro, VT 05487.

Remembering Bob Blue
in Story and Song

Sunday, May 7 from 1-4 p.m.
Amherst Regional High School Auditorium

A message from his daughter Lara about the event:

In his book, "Parents, Teachers, Children," my dad wrote, "For most of my life, I've wanted my own funeral to be a thoroughly joyous occassion. Not one that implied, 'Yipee! We're finally rid of him!", but one that celebrated the joy I've felt throughout most of my life. Now, I understand sadness better, and I understand the very human need to say, "good-bye" when someone is leaving. And I think it's important to make sure there is some way to provide closure. Even-- especially-- if it's sad."

My dad's writing and teaching were, as he said, a way to "pass on much of what I consider important." On May 7, we are going to celebrate the life that brought him so much joy. We'll also learn from him by experiencing his writing and songs. We'll get to know him even better through photos and loving remembrances. And we'll say a sad goodbye to someone who is deeply missed.

Sunday May 7th there will be two opportunities to eat together for people travelling to be at the event honoring Bob.

The gathering is at Amherst High at 1 PM until 4 PM.

Beforehand: Pick up food at a local spot and meet at the Amherst Common starting at 11 AM for a group picnic.
If it's raining: starting at 11:30 until 12:30 people will be at
Amherst Chinese Restaurant (directions below).

Afterward:
5 PM Reservations have been made for a large crowd to go to Amherst Chinese Restaurant at
62 Main Street near the Common. Lara and Joe and other family will also be there.

HOWEVER: To make sure the reservation number is fairly accurate, please call into Sarah Pirtle by Saturday. She is keeping track of numbers.

RESERVATIONS:
Call Sarah at (413) 625-2355. You won't get a confirmation return call. Know that you're on
the list.

HOW TO GET THERE: Drive to the center of Amherst and look for the stone building with

of the loop.

CONTINGENCY: If we happen to get more than 60 people, we'll add space in a restaurant nearby and will inform people during the ceremony.

Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the April Pioneer Valley Folklore Society SONG & STORY SWAP.

The April 9 event will be a special tribute to Bob Blue who died on March 17.
Bob Blue (1948-2006)

Bob's passing leaves fans of his music and his irrepressibly kind spirit feeling a huge sense of loss. He died of complications from multiple sclerosis, a disease he battled for more than 20 years with courage, grace and humor.

His songs have been recorded and performed by dozens of folk artists including Sally Rogers, Charlie King and Pete Seeger. In 2004 he was honored by the Children's Music Network with its Magic Penny Award for an outstanding lifetime contribution to children's music. A resident of Amherst, Bob had been a popular regular contributor to the monthly PVFS Song & Story Swap ever since he served as its first guest performer in April 1996.

The April 9 Song & Story Swap at the Harp will be dedicated to the memory of Bob Blue and the many ways he brightened the lives of those who knew him. All are welcome to come sing Bob's songs, share a memory of him, or simply hear about this remarkable and much loved man. Questions about the evening's program may be directed to host Paul Kaplan (phkaplan@yahoo.com).
